personal interests

In my spare time I perform with the Foothill Afternoon Band playing swing standards and contemporary big band tunes. I've put some recordings online at http://www.alanroter.com/foothill/.

I also enjoy skiing when I can get away. If you would like to check out the ultimate skiing, check out Canadian Mountain Holidays. The Kootenay lodge is easy to get to and offers shorter trips, if you're busy like me.

InfoWorld Award for Innovative Use of AJAX Technology

Before that I was the Director of Computational Biology for Sequana Therapeutics. I joined Sequana as a founding employee in 1993. At Sequana, I led a team of 13 bioinformatics scientists to develop systems for high throughput sequencing, physical mapping, automated sequence annotation and candidate gene analysis. I was also responsible for establishing Sequana's bioinformatics systems for high-throughput genotyping.

From 1988 to 1993, I worked at Applied Biosystems where I authored software for the 373B Automated DNA Sequencer, the original standard in the genomics research community, plus several other software applications.

Concurrent with these positions, I wrote and commercialized a software package called Plasmid ARTIST.

My academic training includes a Ph.D. in Developmental Biology from the University of Chicago, and a BS in Biology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, plus Post-Doctoral work at M.I.T.
